How to Create and Track General Tasks in FieldTask?

Learn how to use General Tasks to track time spent on work that takes place between or outside regular jobs.

General Tasks in FieldTask make it easier to track time spent on activities that are not part of a specific job, such as:

  • Traveling between jobs
  • Office work
  • Job-related activities that are not considered part of the job itself

To use General Tasks, you must first create one from the FieldTask Web App.

Create a General Task

To create a General Task:

  • From the left sidebar, go to Jobs.
  • Select General Tasks.
General Tasks page with Jobs and G. Tasks highlighted.
  • Click Create General Task in the top right corner.
General Tasks page with Create General Task highlighted.

The General Task creation form will appear.

Enter the following information:

  • General Task Name
  • General Task Description

The Job Number is generated automatically, but you can edit it if needed.

  • Assign the General Task to the appropriate Members.
  • Click Create to finish the process.
Create General Task form with task details and assignees.

Your General Task is now ready to be used for time tracking.

Track Time on a General Task from the Mobile App

Once the General Task has been created, you can start tracking time against it from the FieldTask Mobile App.

To start tracking a General Task:

  • Log in to the FieldTask Mobile App.
  • Go to the Timesheets page.
  • Tap Start.
Mobile Timesheets page with Start and Timesheets highlighted.

An app drawer will open and display the General Tasks available to you.

  • Select the General Task you want to track.
General Task selected from the mobile timesheet task list.

Time tracking for that General Task will begin immediately.

Switch from a General Task to a Job

When you arrive at the job location and are ready to start the assigned job, simply check in to the job as usual.

FieldTask will automatically stop the active General Task and check you out of it when you check in to the job.

📌 Note: This helps keep time spent on travel, office work, or other non-job activities separate from the time tracked against an individual job.
